Restaurant Spotlight: Flour

Disclaimer: I’m a big fan of David Griffin, the executive vice president of basketball operations for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Why am I a fan of a guy in New Orleans you ask? It’s simple—Griff, as he’s affectionately referred to by NBA fans and insiders—was the architect of the team that brought Cleveland its first major sports championship in 52 years, the 2016 Cavaliers. While here, Griff was on record as saying his favorite area restaurant was Flour. That’s good enough for me. With the championship general manager’s endorsement in mind, it was time for a family outing to Moreland Hills.
Accompanied by my lovely wife and uber-cool mom, I arrived at Flour on a Monday evening. Luck was on my side, as Mondays feature big-time specials on pizza and beer. Select 10-inch pizzas—cheese, sausage, pepperoni and caccio e pepe (more on that later) are $8—while beer is $2 off.
The beer selection—while limited—is impressive. Regularly priced at $5, bottles offered are Peroni, Progress Pilsner, Amstel Light, Menabrea and Heineken Zero (non-alcoholic). Featured drafts include Anchor Steam ($7), Tank #7 ($7.5) and Market Garden’s Citramax ($7.5) With the Monday special, these beers can be had for $3 to $6. At those prices, consider having two (or three if you aren’t driving)!
On to the pizzas … simply put, they’re delectable. Baked in a wood-fired oven, Flour’s pizzas possess smoky flavors, crunchy toppings and fluffy textures. We ordered two—pepperoni and the caccio e pepe, which features olive oil, black pepper, aged provolone, parmesan, poached egg and smoked pancetta. What sets the pepperoni pizza apart from others I’ve tried is the cheese—it’s topped with both shredded and fresh mozzarella, ensuring diners eat more than just dough and sauce; too many eateries skimp on cheese—that’s not the case here. The caccio e pepe was outstanding as well—the pancetta was fresh and sizable; the ingredients worked in concert; and the egg yolk served as a tasty “sauce.” My only request would be a more even distribution of egg and pancetta.
Flour has other specials during the week. On Tuesdays, all bottles of wine under $100 are half off. They also offer happy hour—at the bar and surrounding high-top tables only—Monday through Friday from 2 – 6:30 p.m. Highlights include draft beer for $4; prosecco for $6; cocktails featuring Absolute, Jack Daniels and Captain Morgan for $6; specialty martinis for $8; small plates—smoked salmon sliders, roasted red pepper hummus and mini tagliatelle bolognese—for $6; six-inch pizzas—pepperoni, sausage and margherita—for $7; and truffled fries for $5. A nice feature at Flour is that diners are given fresh bread and butter prior to the arrival of their food.
Flour has one of the best atmospheres of any restaurant in Northeast Ohio. This may not make sense until you visit yourself, but the setting can be described as casually upscale. On my visit, I saw diners in suits, jeans and workout clothes … and it all worked! The restaurant’s style is chic and contemporary, featuring an open kitchen, subway-tiled bar and modern art. A small patio sits in front of the building, overlooking the parking lot.
