For a guy with a deep-seated aversion to driving on the east side, I sure do find myself there relatively often … what can I say, I’m a sucker for good restaurants, especially those with happy hours. On the agenda today is Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant.

With over 30 locations throughout nine states, the national chain opened its first Northeast Ohio spot in Orange Village late last year. Directly across from Pinecrest, Cooper’s Hawk sits in the Chagrin Highlands South development near Harvard Road and Interstate 271.

Cooper’s Hawk’s atmosphere is warm, modern, inviting and casually upscale. In other words, it’s a classy place that doesn’t feel stuffy. To that end, dining guidelines and a dress code do exist. The gist is this—no offensive clothing, don’t move tables without permission and ask before you take video(s) of other people. The building itself is expansive, combining a winery, tasting room, restaurant and retail market. The market is substantial and features decanters, wine accessories, gifts and gourmet food.

Cooper’s Hawk describes its menu as “contemporary American … infused with flavors from around the world.” That’s accurate. I’d also say the menu is extensive with a variety of choices. Entrées are sectioned off by beef and pork, seafood, chicken, pasta, risotto, burgers and sandwiches, and salads. Highlights include filet mignon, crispy Asian pork, parmesan-crusted chicken, gnocchi Bolognese with braised short rib, southern hot chicken, and citrus-glazed Atlantic salmon and kale. Each menu item is listed with a bin number, directing guests to a suggested wine accompaniment for their chosen dish. Added bonus: Fresh pretzel bread is provided to all tables.

Now onto happy hour, offered Monday through Friday from 3 – 6 p.m., anywhere in the restaurant. Cooper’s Hawk features one of the more wide-ranging happy hour menus—especially for cocktails—that I’ve covered. Specialty drinks and most wines are $6, while food ranges from $6 to $10. Beverages offered include sangria, champagne cocktails, peach collins and American mules; among the food choices are flatbreads, egg rolls, chicken potstickers, meatballs and Asian pork belly tostadas.

The flatbreads were delectable.

The Italian sausage and whipped ricotta flatbread—topped with giardiniera (peppers and carrots), pesto, mozzarella and grated parmesan—was outstanding. The same goes for the carne asada flatbread, which featured sliced skirt steak, pesto, mozzarella, roasted chili sauce, onion and cilantro. Fresh ingredients, crispy crusts and sizable portions make for good pizza. Mission accomplished, Cooper’s Hawk.

About those drinks … My mom sipped on a pineappletini, which she described as sweet and refreshing. Her friend Sam enjoyed a suggested Tuscan red wine that paired expertly with steak flatbread. As of now, beer is absent from the happy hour menu.

The drinks are as good as they look. The pretzel bread is tremendous.

My grandma had a saying — “Always save room for dessert.” How right she was. The group shared desserts, first ordering the s’more budino, an exquisite dish that combined caramel custard, chocolate mousse and toasted graham crackers. Next was the main event, the salted caramel crème brûlée with fresh berries. The salted caramel added tremendous flavor and the topping was perfectly caramelized and hardened. Pick your superlative … bottom line is the crème brûlée was sublime.

The servers at Cooper’s Hawk were personable and informed. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant can get crowded quickly. Parking is not an issue—an ample-size lot surrounds the building.
