One of the advantages of being a midlevel employee for a large nonprofit entity—besides my exorbitant salary (lol)—is the fact I get to work four 10-hour shifts. I know what you’re thinking—oh cool, he must have Fridays or Mondays off. Not quite, friends. My day off is Tuesday. Trust me, if I could switch I would. That said, I’ve actually grown fond of Tuesdays. Having them off makes Mondays more bearable. Even better, Tuesday has become a go-to day for exploring—or getting reacquainted with—area restaurants … which leads us to Beerhead.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the restaurant, as it is one of the nine original establishments to open in 2015 as part of the Flats East Bank development project. The 3,500-square-foot space—a cornerstone of Cleveland’s waterfront entertainment district—is known for its beer, offering 50 selections on tap and over 400 in bottles. In addition to a sizable bar and dining area adorned with beer paraphernalia, Beerhead features a 1,500-square-foot wrap-around patio (open air) with waterfront views and fireplaces.
Beerhead’s menu features appetizers, salads, handhelds, pizzas and desserts. Notable items include a barbarian pretzel (as big as my head), a spinach harvest salad, New Orleans chicken wings, a chicken salad sandwich, an aloha pizza (bbq sauce, pulled pork, shredded mozzarella and pineapple relish), a goodfella pizza (pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mozzarella and herbs) and a Belgium waffle with cinnamon, salted caramel and brown sugar ice cream. Sadly, I’ve yet to sample that, but rest assured that I will.
My mom and I stopped by the restaurant on … you guessed it … Tuesday. We each ordered a beer and split a half-pepperoni, half-sausage pizza. My mom had a Schöfferhofer Grapefruit—a combination of Hefeweizen beer and grapefruit juice—which was dangerously delicious. I had a sip and could have easily chugged the whole thing; it was like drinking freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. My beer of choice, a Brewdog Lost Lager, was crisp with a clean finish—an excellent choice for leisurely daytime drinking.
The pizza was excellent. The dough—light and hand-tossed—was soft and had a distinctive flavor, while the toppings were crispy and flavorful. I also appreciated that Beerhead didn’t skimp on the pepperoni, sausage or sauce.
Our server was tremendous. She provided us numerous samples of beer to try, including, get this, a Platform Beer S’Mores Yammy (sweet potato ale with hints of marshmallow, graham cracker and chocolate). Every time I think craft beer makers can’t top themselves, they find a way. As for the beer, it wasn’t my cup of tea, but by no means was it bad. I just thought it could have used less sweet potato and more marshmallow and chocolate.
What about happy hour? I’m glad you asked. It’s available from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and features $7 select appetizers and half-price specialty pizzas, local drafts and wine.
Parking at Beerhead is easy. If you go during nonpeak hours, there is ample meter parking available on both West 10th Street and Old River Road. If that’s all taken, don’t worry. Numerous pay lots—usually between $5 and $10—exist in the Flats.
Good beer ✔️. Good pizza ✔️. Good service ✔️. Waterfront views ✔️. Oh yeah, they’re dog friendly, too! There’s a lot to like about Beerhead. Cheers!
