Happy Hour Spotlight: Austin’s Wood Fire Grille

Friends, I’m excited. I think I found a new go-to happy hour spot. It’s close, easy to get to, has impeccable service and is highly rated (4.4 stars out of 292 Google reviews). What is this magical place, you ask? It’s Austin’s Wood Fire Grille in Brecksville.

Austin’s is a casual, independent steakhouse with locations in Brecksville and Mayfield Village, and coming soon to Mentor. The menu features fresh-made products like hand-cut steaks, fish and wood-grilled and smoked meats. All the dishes are made from scratch and grilled over hardwood, not gas. You really do notice a difference in items prepared on a wood fire grill—to me, the food is more distinctive and flavorful. The science behind wood fire cooking is actually quite interesting. Now that science class is over, let’s get to happy hour. Austin’s offers it seven days a week (jackpot) from 3 to 6 p.m. in the bar area. Specials include half-price appetizers, discounted beer and $4 house wines. The appetizers—10 total—are wide ranging and include coconut shrimp, blackened ahi tuna, Carolina crab cake, stuffed banana peppers, jumbo chicken wings and Polynesian calamari.

My mom ordered the calamari while I chose the coconut shrimp. Both selections, which featured attractive presentations, were outstanding. The calamari was lightly seasoned, golden fried and finished with sesame seeds, garlic aioli and Szechwan sauce. A side of sriracha sauce gave it just the right amount of kick while a fresh pineapple chunk served as an effective accompaniment. The coconut shrimp were flaky, light and flavorful, and paired well with the provided tangy chef sauce. No complaints about the drinks either. My mom enjoyed her chardonnay while I delighted in a seasonal Oktoberfest beer.

Make sure you get to happy hour early, as the bar area, while nice, is small. Austin’s features a 16-seat bar adjacent to two small high-top tables. Our bartender Carmen was the best. Picture a classic, old-school bartender and that’s him. He was knowledgeable, attentive, friendly and knew many of the guests by name.
