Restaurant Spotlight: Blue Ginger Asian Bistro

Don’t be fooled by Blue Ginger’s unassuming exterior.

Greetings, friends. In a recent post, I expressed excitement at finding a new go-to happy hour spot. Well, I may have found another go-to spot, this time for lunch. Best of all, it’s close to my job in Parma and my condo in Broadview Heights. The place? Blue Ginger Asian Bistro.

Blue Ginger sits in Parma’s Pleasant Valley Shopping Center at Broadview and Pleasant Valley Roads. Nestled between Magic Nails & Spa and Dollar Tree, I’ve driven by the restaurant hundreds of times over the years but never stopped in. That all changed last Friday when I met my mom for lunch.

The contemporary bar is a highlight of Blue Ginger.

Upon entering, I was struck by Blue Ginger’s atmosphere. It was clean and classy, with a full, elegant bar and eye-catching art donning the walls. The restaurant offers a variety of authentic Asian dishes, such as sushi, sashimi, noodles and fried rice, hibachi, miso soup, tuna nuta, shrimp tempura and pad thai.

Blue Ginger features moderate prices and lots of deals. Lunch specials are available Monday through Saturday from 12 to 3 p.m.; sushi is half off Mondays and Tuesdays; and happy hour is offered Wednesday through Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

My mom and I took advantage of the lunch specials. Blue Ginger’s lunchtime “business boxes” are $8 and feature a main course accompanied by soup or salad, jasmine or fried rice, three pieces of fried shumai (Chinese dumplings) and a spring roll. Available main courses include sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, crispy tilapia, steak teriyaki, Thai shrimp curry and chicken, vegetable or shrimp tempura.

I enjoyed my sesame chicken business box. It was perfectly portioned, with each dish effectively complementing one another. The chicken was tender, the salad was tasty, the rice was flavorful, the spring roll was crispy and the shumai were delectable. My mom had the vegetable tempura business box. The vegetables—impressive in size and golden brown—were effectively seasoned and coated; far too often, the breading in tempura dishes is overwhelming and masks what is underneath—not so at Blue Ginger. Like me, my mom gave the side dishes a thumbs up. I’d be remiss without commenting on the attractive presentation of the dishes; it really did add to the enjoyment of our meals.

The staff on our visit was first-rate. Everyone—from the hostess to our server—was welcoming, polite and knowledgeable.

If you’re seeking a quality restaurant in the southwest suburbs, look no further than Blue Ginger. Well-prepared dishes, reasonable prices and great service—I wish it didn’t take me so long to visit. Better late than never, right? Maybe I’ll see you there for lunch … or for happy hour … or for half-off sushi. Regardless, chances are you’ll catch me there again. Cheers!
